The Vallejo City Council is considering a shift to “by-district” elections.

In Vallejo’s current “at-large” election system, those who are elected to the City Council represent the entire city. Under district elections, each elected council member will represent a specific geographical area in Vallejo.

The at-large system has been challenged statewide as being discriminatory against certain racial, ethnic and disenfranchised populations.

The Vallejo City Council voted recently to switch to district elections. A community meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Diaz & Loera Centro Latino at 520 Broadway St. and another will be held on Nov. 27 during a public hearing at the City Council meeting.
